| Michael Dalton and the Cambridgeshire Daltons by R.N.D. Hamilton | p.16 |
| This Michael Dalton was a famous author of legal books about 1620. His arms were the same silver lion on a blue background, though no connection with the Lancashire Daltons has been proved. A family tree is given, showing the descendants of Thomas Dalton of Hildersham, died 1602 and his son Michael. | |
| This Michael had considerable property in Cambridgeshire and chambers in Lincoln's Inn. He was married twice and his second marriage was the subject of scandal, as their daughter Dorothy married her mother's half-brother, Sir Giles Allington, who was fined £12,000 for incest. Michael is buried in West Wratting Church. A John Dalton of Cumberland was Vicar of Little Abington in 1634 and may possibly be connected with these Cambridgeshire Daltons. | |

| Historical memoir of the family of Dalton of the Kingdom of Ireland, by Michael N. Dalton | p.25 |
| This paper is founded on manuscript notes left by an uncle of D.S. Dalton of Sheffield. It lists the family of Dalton in Ireland, as recorded in documents in the Archives of the Herald's Office in Ireland. The family is of Norman French descent and in the time of Henry II, went to Ireland. Sir Walter De Aliton was given land in Westmeath and became the Governor thereof. His wife Jane founded a nunnery. His son, Sir Phillip, founded an Abbey and his descendants preserved their territories against all invaders. | |
| In the Civil Wars, the head of the family was stripped of his possessions,
but given a small estate in Connaught. They raised a body of horse
for King James II and intermarried with many other old Irish families of
Norman descent.
One branch of the family settled in Waterford, but they too forfeited their property in the Civil Wars. Another branch settled in Tipperary and hold their estates there to this day. Their present descendant is Oliver Dalton of Rathconrath. They are allowed to use the Coat of Arms of Counts of the German Empire, namely Azure, a Lyon rampant Argent. |

This was held at St. Swithun's Church, on 2nd Jul, as part of a greater celebration, that of the 150th anniversary of the Oxford Movement. First we had a hymn that J. M. Neale had translated. Then Canon Greenacre commemorated his great literary work on the Eastern Church. He also spoke of Dr. Neale's foundation of the Sisters of St. Margaret and the service concluded with another of his hymns.. Later, at Neale house, a chaplain spoke of Dr. Neale's promotion of the Scottish Episcopal Church. | |
| The Druce Papers by R. N. D. Hamilton | p.24 |
| Dick Hamilton has selected a few items for comment from among the many papers sent to the | |
| Society by Mrs. Kate Druce who died last year. Her mother-in-law Mrs Gertrude Druce was a breeder of West Highland terriers near Chester. The papers include several letters from the famous actress Marie Tempest about mating her bitch Fanny and from an Italian Mr. Volkhart about buying a bitch. | |
| There is a cutting about Edith Margaret Thrupp, her sister and
the fourth child of the Rev. William Edward Dalton. The cutting is
from The Lady's Pictorial and is headed Mrs. George Thrupp a Pioneer Automobilist
Another cutting stated that Mrs. Thrupp had been driving ever since 1896.
There is a chart for marking change in position in the Torpids of 1894, with all the bumps marked and crosses against the names of E. Druce and and in a list of rowing crews on the back of a map of the University Racing Course for 1894, there is a cross against F. H. Dalton. From Wales, there is a cutting about the disposal of the mansion Nannau by Brigadier Vaughan and a collection of old family photographs, not all of which are identified. |

| Chapter I. | |
| This paper discusses the tradition that the Daltons of Witney, the so-called junior Dalton line, are descended from Roger Dalton of Thurnham. The author gives a transcription of the will of Roger, dated 1588, which makes no mention of a son called Walter. The possibility that the Witney Daltons are descended from the Yorkshire Dalton line is then discussed and suggestions made for further lines of research, to clarify the connections between the Yorkshire Daltons, the three Walter Daltons at Witney and James Dalton of Pembrey. | |
| The Junior Dalton Line, the Missing Link by R. N. D. Hamilton | p.26 |
| Chapter II. | |
| The possibility that Lawrence Dalton, Norry King of Arms, was the father of the first Walter Dalton of Witney is discussed. Transcriptions of the wills of Lawrence Dalton (1561) and his wife Dorothy (1595) are given. There is no mention in either will of any children, so this possibility is discounted. | |
| However, Dorothy seems to have had some connections with Cambridgeshire and this Chapter concludes with notes on the historical background of London in the time of Lawrence and Dorothy Dalton. | |

| John was a priest at Little Waldingfield in Essex, in the 1470's. His will has been transcribed here from the Latin. In it he leaves his Breviary to Richard Hatfield, also a priest, and his bed coverings to Joan Ball who seems to have been his housekeeper. | |
| The Dalton Gang and family by Nancy B. Samuelson | p.20 |
| The Dalton gang is famous in legend as outlaws in the Wild West. This paper looks at the real men, and their family. Robert, Gratton and Emmett were brothers, sons of Lewis and Adilene Dalton, who had many children, all of whom are listed here. Their grandparents and other relations are also detailed. | |
| Three Dalton families of Oldham by Lucy Joan Slater | p.28 |
| The first Dalton mentioned in the parish records of Oldham were John and Ellen who baptised a child in 1666. Their descendants over seven generations are given as family trees. Also, the extraction of burial records from Oldham St. Mary's has led to a correction being needed to the tree of the author's direct ancestors, given in D. G. S. J. Vol. 13, No. 1. | p.32 |
| The Robert shown there as the head of this Dalton family in fact died a few months after his christening. so this part of the tree has had to be corrected as shown here. (Moral, always kill off your ancestors if you can!) | |

| The Junior Dalton Line, the Missing Link, by R. N. D. Hamilton | p.21 |
| Chapter IV
The missing link is that between Walter Dalton I of Oxfordshire and the Daltons of Lancashire or Yorkshire. Here Mr. Hamilton tries to trace back from Walter and discusses the will of a William Dalton of Witney who died in 1563 and had a son "Water". His widow Jone left her estate to her son Walter. Another son, Thomas had died or moved away. There are several documents surviving which mention a William Dalton of Witney as a chantry priest, as the owner of land, and as a mercer. So there may have been three men alive at the same time, in the same village, with the same name. Walter Dalton the first was a mercer, who became prominent in the affairs of Witney. His will is given at length, together with his inventory dated 1628. |

| This short paper outlines the descendants of Samuel Dalton born 1692, emigrated to America and lived to be 110. He owned a lot of land in Virginia and was connected by marriage with several well known American families. His grand niece Catherine Bird wrote to her nephew William Yancey that they may have been connected to a Lord Dalton of Yorkshire who had died about 1771 leaving £1,000,000 unclaimed. | |

| This article continues the discussion about the three Walter Daltons of Whitney, with a description of the will of Walter Dalton the second and the few facts we have about Walter Dalton the third. The entries in an old family bible give some very different facts about the three Walters when compared with parish records and wills. An attempt is made to reconcile these differences. But despite careful searching by the author, no final conclusions are reached. Many possible lines are suggested for further research into the family history of the three Walters of Whitney. | |

| 1) To the Four Mile and beyond - A Dalton Family in Australia
by Michael Dalton. This first paper tells how Edmund Dalton emigrated
from Liverpool on the "Ocean Chief" and married Johanna Fogarty in Melbourne
in 1859. In 1863 they moved onto a twenty acre plot of land, which
became known as the Four-Mile, under Land Acts of the 1860's. They
lived in a small wooden hut and, by hard work, obtained another forty acres.
By the 1890's they held the freehold on 280 acres and, after the deaths
of Edmund and Johanna, the farm was further increased to 998 acres.
It passed to Edmund's second son William, who raised his family there and
finally sold out on his retirement.
2) Recollections of the Four-Mile by Bill Dalton S.J. The second paper contains recollections of family life in the house at Four-Mile by Edmund's grandson Bill Dalton. 3) Life on the Four-Mile by Kevin Dalton. This paper also contains memories of life at Four-Mile in the 1920's, by Bill's brother Kevin. 4) Memories of the Four-Mile by Bill Dalton. This contains recollections of the happy family life at Four-Mile. This Bill Dalton is the son of the second Edward and the great grand son of Edmund, the founder of the Four-Mile Dalton clan. |

| More about early Dalton priests by Lucy Joan Slater
This article notes some early references to priests of the name Dalton, three priests from Furness Abbey, Sir Thomas de Dalton from Rochdale St. Chad's in the fourteenth century, William Dalton who attended Sir Robert Dalton at the battle of Crecy in 1346 and Peter Dalton who was the treasurer of Lincoln Cathedral until his death in 1402. His will gives a vivid account of life in Lincoln at that time. Another Robert Dalton was a priest in Lincoln at the same time and several priests called John Dalton are noted in the fifteenth century. |

| James Dalton of Lincoln's Inn by R. N. D. Hamilton
This man has already been mentioned in several papers as a prominent lawyer of his time, the sixteenth century. In this paper, Mr. Hamilton discusses in some detail the career of James Dalton at Lincoln's Inn and his effect on the Inn as it is today. The influence of James Dalton on the City of London is also discussed. He was one of the Judges in the Sheriff's Court. He also sat for Parliament, where he concerned himself with religion, Mary Queen of Scots and the succession. He was a Puritan but never an extremist. His contemporaries would have included Roger Dalton of Yorkshire and Michael Dalton of West Wratting. He would also have known Dorothy Daltonof Fleet Street and was a contemporary of William Dalton of Witney. In an oral will, James left everything to his wife Marie and probate was granted to her in 1601. Marie died soon after him and there is no mention of any children. |

| Recollections of Australia 1988 by Michael Neale Dalton
This article gives an account of the visit of the Editor to the First International Congress on Family History held in Australia in Oct 1988, which is fuller than that given in the Editorial letter of Vol. 17 part 2. Michael and Kate left Heathrow in a Boeing 747 and arrived in Sydney 21 hours later, after a short stop at Bangkok. They were met by Jill and Ralph Warren and Pat and Rai Adams and, after a short rest, preparations were made for a DGS booth at the Congress exhibition, with a large assembly of display material about the Daltons. The congress opened on Wednesday 19th Oct and lasted for four days, at the Convention Centre at Darling Harbour. The theme of the DGS stand was "Daltons down under". There were four sections;- 1) From High Holborn to Richmond Hill, 2) A living line 1230-1988 showing Mrs Thoms' double descent from Sir Rychard Dalton of Bispham, 3) The Four-Mile story, the settling of Edmund Dalton from Ireland, and 4) a final panel asking the question "Are you descended from a Dalton?" This display kept Michael busy with many enquiries and 12 new members were signed up. The Congress had 60 exhibitors and over 100 lectures. Darling Harbour is linked by monorail to the centre of Sydney. Here there was also a large social programme, including a banquet at the Sheraton Hotel and a visit to the Sydney Opera House. Michael and Kate then spent a few days at Box Hill and visited Mittagong, the home of Jill's parents. Finally, they flew back to London with stops at Singapore and Bombay. The article concludes with some photographs of the stand. |

| The 1988 DGS gathering by Michael Neale Dalton
This was in Leeds at the home of Morag Simpson. There the AGM was held after a buffet lunch. Then a talk was given by Howard Dalton and Anthony Cox about their line, the Daltons of Garton-on-the-Wolds who were blacksmiths there over 200 years ago. On Sunday, a trip was made to Sleningford Hall, once owned by John Dalton and Isabella Dalton nee Wray. Edward Bryant, the owner, showed the party round. The next visit was to the church of West Tanfield St. Nicholas, which has many Dalton memorials. Lunch was at the Wyvill Arms, at Constable Burton. The party then went to Hauxwell church and saw Hauxwell Hall from a distance. The article concludes with some pictures of the Gathering and the places visited. |

| A living line, AD 1230 - AD 1988 by R. N. D. Hamilton
This paper describes the descent along two lines of a person living in 1988 from a person living in 1230. Mrs. Thoms of New Zealand asked about her descent from some Irish Daltons through an Avice Dalton of Waterford and her husband Jenkin Conway. Avis descended from Sir Robert, the elder son of Sir Rychard Dalton of Bispham and a long tree is given showing this descent. Sir Robert, was Keeper of the Tower of London. His son, Sir John, was with his father at the battle of Crecy but got into trouble with the King through abducting Margery de la Beche. His son, also Sir John, married Isabell Pilkington and was in trouble with the Pope as he had married a grand child of his own grandmother's family, the Lathams. His son was Sir Richard of Apethorpe. He lived and died in Northamptonshire and a fine alabaster carving of him is in Apethorpe church. Photographs of this are given here. His daughter Ales Dalton married into the Griffith family of Penryn and one of her descendants was Robert Bolton of Ireland. Jenkin Conway was Avis's husband in Ireland. He seems to have been a bit of a pirate, seizing goods in the name of the King and then keeping them for himself. Robert Bolton married Elizabeth Blennerhassett of Kerry who was a descendant of Sir John Dalton the younger son of Sir Rychard of Bispham. Mrs. Thoms is a descendant of this marriage as she is descended from Sir Rychard's son Robert on one line and from Sir Rychard's other son John on the other line. |

Mrs. Dalton gives a lucid account of how she has traced her husband's roots back to Charles Dalton, silversmith. | Three Dalton families of Lincolnshire by Lucy Joan Slater
In this paper three families are not seemingly interrelated, yet they live in a small area of Lincolnshire. The first family are the Daltons of Knaith and Leatherhead. They lost three sons in a short time, one of them killed in a duel, and they owned a large house at Knaith on the river Trent. They stem from Richard Dalton born 1675 at Leatherhead and a tree of this family is given. One son, Richard Dalton, was one of the founders of the Royal Academy. The second family stems from Samuel Dalton born at Headon about 1710. His great grandson was James Dalton who became a successful farmer at Fillingham, married twice and had two large families. The third family come from the Daltons of Sleningford and, in particular, from John the son of John Dalton and Isabella Wray. He inherited Fillingham Castle from his grandmother Lady Wray in 1826. His grandson, John Dalton IV married Georgina Tower. Their daughter Georgina married Seymour Portman and combined her family arms with those of the Portman family. Many members of these families are buried in Fillingham church. Six family trees are given. In search of Daltons down under by Aubrey and Hazel Dalton. |

Philemon is said to have been the first man with the surname Dalton to land in America in 1635. He was followed by his brother Timothy founded a Church called the Church of Jesus Christ in Hampton, New Hampshire. Timothy had been a sizer at St. John's College, Cambridge and the Rector of Wolverstone before he vanished from England and turned up in New Hampshire, in 1636 as so many Puritans were forced to do. There are three pages of American descendants from Philemon Dalton. |

| Some Westmorland Daltons - 1 by Morag Simpson
DGS member Mrs. Dalton Eash is descended from Thomas Dalton of Appleby in Westmorland. The I.G.I. gave her great great grand parents and the parish registers gave the great grandparents and their christening places. Descendants of Thomas who remained in the district were traced. The parents of Thomas of Appleby came from Winton, two miles north of Kirkby Stephen and near the writer's own holiday home. The proof that this was the same Thomas Dalton who has gone to America was given by a yellowed newspaper cutting, his obituary in 1904 in the local Appleby newspaper. Research was concentrated on the four surviving sons of William and Eleanor Dalton, John Dalton 1808-1892, Thomas Dalton 1816-1904, Robert Dalton 1819-1897 and James Dalton b.1824. | This article proves that the Thomas who stands at the head of a long line of East Anglian Daltons is the same Thomas who is the grandson of Thomas Dalton of Hildersham, in Cambridge, by a study of the family wills, Thomas's of 1672, his uncle John of Harplay 1691, and cousins on the Jermyn side of the family. His son, John Dalton 1665-1713 of Bury St. Edmunds provided in his will for his two children, Thomas who had no heirs and Dulcibella his daughter, so this line of Daltons died out. There are three interesting charts of the family connections. | p.17
